Quien es Spike Devil Disco?
Mi nombre es Gerardo Cabañas y me dedico a la música desde que tengo recuerdos solidos. A los 13 años comence en la onda de las bandas tocando batería con Sin Remitente y por no tener bajista en la banda y si un mejor baterista aprendi a tocar el bajo y la guitarrra por consiguiente.
Años despues siguieron proyectos como; Ulama,Claustrofonia, La Mulata, hasta llegar a Debralleitor en el cual todos teníamos ya el manejo de varios instrumentos y todos nos cambiabamos de la guitarra al bajo y del bajo a los syntes,permitiendo mejores arreglos y comenzando a componer Cumbias Electronicas. Esto ya hace más de 5 años. He participado en la composición de Jingles y en la Producción y Organización de diferentes eventos musicales en diferentes estados y Principalmente en el D.F.
Cuenta nos algo de que projectos estas enrollado en ahorita y un poco sobre ellos.
Despues de salir de Debralleitor, Arturo Morgado(R2-S) y Yo Spikey jojojo, apartir de trabajar los 2 como encargados de un bar de onda en el Cento de Tlalpan comenzamos a entrar en la onda de la mezcla y poco a poco fuimos tomando fuerza haciendo sonar con un par de Technics y retomando las raices del High energy y música noventera el nuevo rumbo que le daríamos al Genero formando POLYMILLER.
Nuestro trabajo se convirtio en un estilo de vida, comenzamos a producir en compus y a componer con instrumentos música bailable con tintes de high energy, funk y cumbia haciendo una mezcla entre live act y D.J set.Mientras surgía Polymiller en esos años Comenzamos un proyecto al lado de Ali Gua Gua y de Sonido Islandia,haciendo las Cumbia Nights de los Kumbia Knights presentandonos en distintos lugares y haciendo que la gente volteara a escuchar la nueva Cumbia que se estaba haciendo y permitiendo que se empaparan de la vieja escuela del genero tambien.
Hoy en el Crew de Kumbia Knights han aparecido varios artistas más de la escena y cada vez se nutre más el Genero con la gran explosión que se esta dando con proyectos como:Sonido Changorama,Afrodita,Kumbia Queers por mencionar algunos,por que cada vez son más y con una calidad excelente
Que piensas del movimiento de la nueva cumbia en comparacion al cumbia sonidera moderna? Se han juntado esos estilos? Como esta el movimiento de todo eso en Mexico?
La Nueva Cumbia,Nu Cumbia, Electro Cumbia o Space Cumbia como la llaman ahora,esta teniendo un gran auge y se ha desarrollado apartir de la fusión de instrumentos más electronicos, sampleos, loops y demas arreglos que la producción en una compu han permitido dar a esa fusión haciendola más rica en cuanto a estilos se refiere, por que ahora escuchamos una Cumbia-punk con tintes de Cumbia Old School y aderezada con Syntes y Sampleos para darle ese sello que los “Nuevos Sonideros” Tambien le meten.
EL Sonidero en México ha sido parte importante en el desarrollo de la Cumbia como se hace en estos momentos y parece ser un parametro que no se pierde y que se toma en cuenta Por la manera en que se mete en los corazones de las personas y los hace bailar tanto una Guaracha como una Techno Cumbia,con sus respectivas voces con delays y efectos que te llevan a un Trance Hipnotico que te invita a bailar. El Sonidero Surge Basicamente en Tepito,en la fiesta del barrio,surge primeramente como una necesidad que se da para animar las fiestas y despues se hace un elemento muy importante ya que el Sonidero es melomano de corazón. El Sonidero escucha música de todos los generos y retoma las mejores piezas para bailar y las transforma con efectos, le sube y baja el Pitch de acuerdo al humor y el ambiente que se va creando alrededor de la pista con sus luces y el humo que las maquinas escupen para crear un ambiente único donde la fiesta y el Baile se vuelven intimos e indispensables.
En México afortunadamente y gracias a nuestro folcklore que es muy amplio las nuevas corrientes de la Cumbia estan pasando por un buen momento que permite que se mezclen generos transgrediendo los limites musicales y formando cada vez un vinculo más solido entre La Cumbia y cualquier genero que le quieras poner enfrente,ya quees uno de los ritmos más nobles y cadenciosos se presta para hacer bailar desde la Chica más Fresa hasta al rockero más rudo y malencarado!!!
Que tipo de temas te funciona bien en la pista ahora?
En estos momentos mi repertorio se compone mucho de Cumbia Instrumental Old School ya que te permite hacer uso de los beats por separado y poderlos mezclar con generos como el Rock, Funk, Funk Brasileiro, Dub y algunos exitos del dancefloor ochentero y noventero, haciendo mash ups, pero tambien Cumbias clasicas y Cumbias nuevas que todos los días van Surgiendo gracias a la gran Oferta que tenemos en el País con proyectos nuevos que traen frescura al genero y permiten que la Pista siga Caliente y renovandose constantemente.

Who is Spike Devil Disco?
My name is Gerald Cabins and I have dedicated myself to music since I have my first solid memories. At the age of 13 I started in the wave of the bands playing drums with Sin Remitente and since they didn’t have a bass player in the band and they had a better drummer I learned to play bass and the guitarr.
Years later followed projects like; Ulama, Claustrofonia, La Mulata, until arriving at Debralleitor in which we already had the handling of several instruments and swiched from guitar to the bass one and from the bass to syntes, allowing better arrangements and foundation to compose Cumbias Electronic. This is now more than 5 years ago. I have participated in the composition of Jingles and in the Production and Organization of different musical events in different states and Mainly in the D.F.
Tell us a little about what projects you are involved with right now and a little about them.
After leaving Debralleitor, Arturo Morgado (R2-S) and I Spikey, the 2 of us apart from being in charge of a popular bar in the center of Tlalpan we began to enter the world of the mixing and little by little we were gaining force doing so with a pair of Technics and retaking the roots of the High Energy and 90’s music and the new course that we would give genre formed POLYMILLER.
Our work changed into a way of life, we began to produce in computers and to compose dance music with instruments and with influences from High Energy, Funk and Cumbia making a mix between live act and D.J Sets. When Polymiller evolved in those years we began a project next to Ali Gua Gua and of Sonido Iceland, doing the Cumbia Nights of the Kumbia Knights playing different places and making people turn around to listen to the new Cumbia that we where doing that also allowed mixing with the old school tunes of the genre.
Today in the Kumbia Knights Crew there have emerged many new acts and everytime the genre becomes stronger in the explosion that is occurring with projects like: Sound Changorama, Aphrodite, Kumbia Queers just to mention a few, every time they are more and they keep an excellent quality.
What you think of movement of New Cumbia in comparison to modern Cumbia Somidera ? Have the style come together? How are thing developing in that scene in Mexico right now?
The Nueva Cumbia, Nu Cumbia, Electro Cumbia or Space Cumbia as they call it now, is having great success and has been developed from of the fusion of more electronic instruments, sampling, loops and other adjustments that the production in the computer has allowed to get that fusion and making it richer as far as styles we talk about, so that now we listened to a Cumbia-punk with influences of Cumbia Old School and decorated with synthes and sampless to give it that seal that “New Sonideros ” also puts on it.
EL Sonidero (the soundsystem) in Mexico has played an important part in the development of the Cumbia that is made at the moment and it seemes to be a parameter that is not lost and you can see it in the way in which they moves hearts of the people and it makes them dance to Guaracha as much as a Techno Cumbia, with its respective voices with delays and effects that puts you in a hipnotic trance that makes you wanna dance. The Sonidero surge basically from Tepito, in the parties of the “Barrio”, and arised firstly like a necessity to animate celebrations and has later become an element very important since the Sonidero is melomane of heart. The Sonidero listen to music of all the sorts and retakes the best pieces to dance and he transforms them with effects, raising and lowering the pitch according to humor and the atmosphere that is created around dancefloor with its lights and the smoke that the machines spit out to create a unique atmosphere where the party and dance becomes intimate and indispensable.
In Mexico luckyly and thanks to our folklore that is very ample the new currents of the Cumbia thriving and allows to be mixed transgressing the musical borders and forming every time a stronger link between the Cumbia and whatever genre you like to put in front of it. And since it is one of the most noble and cadensed rhythms and makes everyone dance, from the freshest girl to the most stinking ugliest rocker!!!
What type of tunes work well in dances in Mexico right now?
At the moment my set is made up much of Instrumental Old School Cumbia since it allows you to separately make use of beats and to be able to mix them with al sorts of music like Rock, Funk, Funk Brasileiro, Dub and some of the 80’s and 90’s dancefloor hits, making mash ups, but also classic Cumbias and new Cumbias that comes every day thanks to the great supply that we have in the Country with new projects that bring freshness to the genre and allow the dancefloor to keep hot and constantly renewing itself.
